  • Overview

    Responsible for providing transportation within Middlesex County for all MCAT transportation services - demand response, shuttle, etc. The employee is required to pick up passengers and transport them to their destinations, observe and report upon the condition of those clients, and maintain the cleanliness of the vehicle for all MCAT services. The employee will be required to interact in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner with the public and co-workers alike.

     Reports to Division Manager and/or their designee.  


    • Performs duties assigned to ensure that eligible county residents are picked up and transported to their destination in a safe, reliable, courteous and professional manner. This may include providing courteous assistance to elderly and/or residents with disabilities. The driver will need to work with transporting residents in all weather conditions.
    • Provides transportation along fixed routes, including but not limited to shuttles, Veterans transportation, shopping and sheltered workshops, special trips, etc.
    • Maintains vehicle documentation.  This includes tracking mileage, vehicle inspection details and daily safety check details. 
    • Provides Curb to Curb service with assistance on and off vehicle.
    • Follows all safety instructions per the direction of Division Manager, Supervisor, Fleet Coordinator, or Dispatcher.
    • Follows the route described on the vehicle manifest / Tablet and alerts dispatch if there will be a delay in their schedule.
    • Communicates with Dispatch for any additions, changes or information pertaining to their daily schedule.
    • Ambulate/walk on even and uneven surfaces, including stairs/steps, in all weather conditions.
    • This position under Federal Transit Administration guidelines (title 49 CFR parts 653,654,655) is classified as “Safety Sensitive” and is subjected to Drug & Alcohol regulations (title 49 CFR part 40) and testing.
    • Performs additional duties as assigned by Division Manager, Supervisor, Fleet Coordinator or Dispatcher.  


    Background and Experience requirements:


    This position requires possession and retention:

    • Valid Class B commercial driver’s license (NJSA 39:5B-32, FMCSR Title 49 CFR 390-397) with a passenger endorsement
    •  Valid Federal Motor Carrier/NJMVC approved Medical Examiner Certificate (NJAC 13:21-14.5 c 6).
    • Complete and pass, within the 90-day working test period, the Community Transportation Associations Passenger Assistance Safety & Sensitivity (PASS) course and the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission approved Defensive Driving Course (DDC)
    • This position requires the employee to work extensively with senior citizens and/or persons with disabilities; therefore experience with these populations is desirable. The employee will be required to use a computer and tablet, along with other electronic devices, to determine appropriate routing to a stated destination. Also, must be able to read a map. Must be sufficiently proficient in written and spoken English to be able to read road signs, recognize addresses, understand route sheets and communicate clearly via mobile radio. Additionally, the employee must have strong customer service skills and needs to be able to maintain positive, professional relationships with a diverse client base.
    • Must be able to push and pull up to 75 pounds.
    • Must be able to lift and carry:
      • lift up to 50 pounds occasionall
      • carry up to 37 pounds occasionally
      • lift up to 20 pounds frequently 
    • Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 shopping bags each weighing up to 15lbs each while transporting shoppers Physical Strength Rating Assessment as per DOT: Medium. Definition of Medium Work: (occasional lift up to 50 pounds, pull up to 64 pounds, and push up to 64 pounds)
    • For a Motor Vehicle Operator to safely perform all required duties in an efficient manner, they must also be able to occasionally lift loads (maximum weight of 50 pounds), manipulate wheelchairs with occupants up/down ramps (up to 64 pounds), and be able to fasten wheelchairs with occupants to the floor (below knee level). Manual operation of wheelchair lift may be required (downward vertical push up to 47 pounds).
